Ruben Lopez, MA, LPC-Associate
(Supervised by Ana Guadalupe Reyes, PhD, LPC-S)
Ruben "Rue" Lopez (he/el) earned an A.A. in Psychology from Prairie State College, a B.A. in Psychology from Governors State University with emphases in Gender and Sexuality Studies, an M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Governors State University, and now, he is working towards his Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision at UT San Antonio. His research interests include relational-cultural theory, interpersonal relationships, gender and sexuality, and psychometrics in counseling.
Before becoming a full-time counselor, Rue was a regional manager for sexual assault advocacy services and crisis intervention at the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago; these experiences have shaped how he works with trauma survivors. His clinical areas of focus include trauma, gender and sexuality, interpersonal relationships, and multicultural counseling. His counseling orientation integrates Relational-Cultural Theory and Person-Centered Theory; He believes healing occurs by developing interdependent growth-fostering relationships throughout our lifespan and that individuals who acknowledge their life experiences without conditions of worth are capable of change. His understanding of psychopathology, supported by his guiding theories, is that isolation and disconnection limit one’s ability to self-actualize and see potential areas of growth. Rue is queer and his interpersonal style is expressive, straightforward, and open. He shares these personal aspects of himself to understand elements that contribute to his worldview and professional identity.
Rue was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He has been living in San Antonio for over a year now. San Antonio has become a new home for him because the people are down-to-earth and caring. In his free time, he enjoys outdoor activities, quilting and painting, spending time with friends and family (especially his niece Maddie), and hanging out with his dog, Mojavi, who occasionally makes virtual appearances.
Rue is not credentialed with health insurance plans, however they are able to utilize supervisory billing with Aetna, BCBS, and Cigna plans.
